PNT Roundup: STOIC technology to augment or substitute for GPS

The X-47B unmanned combat aircraft receives fuel from an Omega K-707 tanker on April 22 while operating in the Atlantic Test Ranges over the Chesapeake Bay. This test marked the first time an unmanned aircraft refueled in flight. The X-47B is a tailless, jet-powered, blended-wing-body aircraft capable of semi-autonomous operation and aerial refueling.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) selected Rockwell Collins to develop technologies that could serve as a backup to GPS. The research, being conducted as part of DARPA’s Spatial, Temporal and Orientation Information in Contested Environments (STOIC) program, aims to reduce warfighter dependence on GPS for modern military operations. read more

According to UrsaNav Inc., the Wildwood eLoran (100 kHz) transmitter will be continuously broadcasting from 0900 (EDT) on Oct. 20 through 1800 (EDT) on Oct. 22. eLoran Progresses Toward GPS Back-Up Role in U.S., Europe

As of June 19, eLoran is on the air in the United States. The low-frequency signal emanates from a former U.S. Coast Guard Loran Unit in Wildwood, N.J., which sports a 625-foot signal mast that has been out of action for five years. The signal is receivable at distances of up to 1,000 miles. The eLoran navigation and communications signal is difficult to disrupt; further, it could be an important part of enabling UAVs to fly safely in our airspace. read more
