Blast from Sun Unsettles Earth’s Magnetic Field, but No Storming

Forecasters at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center said the sun’s coronal mass ejection (CME) that reached Earth on Jan. 9, unsettled the geomagnetic field but did not cause storm conditions to be reached due to the weak magnetic field. On December 6 last year, the sun emitted a burst of radio energy that impacted the performance of GPS receivers all over the sunlit side of the Earth. That the sun produces radio emissions is not surprising. What is surprising is that on this day they were extremely powerful. read more
